The Union flag flew above Belfast City Hall every day of the year until 3rd December 2012 when politicians in Northern Ireland voted to reserve its use to 18 designated days. The reason being that many people in Belfast aren’t represented by the Union flag. This has led to continuing illegal roadblocks and petrol bomb attacks against the police. There’s no resolution in sight.

The Irish tricolour, representing the Republic of Ireland
There hasn’t been a flag of Northern Ireland since the Ulster banner was used by the old Northern Ireland Government between 1953 and 1972.
The Ulster banner
There’s the older St. Patrick’s Saltire, which is even said to predate the tricolour by 150 years. It was flown at the 2011 Edinburgh Military Tattoo to designate Northern Ireland, seen as less contentious than the Ulster banner.
St. Patrick’s Saltire
Some political commentators have suggested the creation of a new flag for Northern Ireland.
I’ll pitch one.
Northern Ireland flag
Northern Ireland plays football in green and white, as does the Irish rugby team (consisting of players from the north and south) so I don’t see the need to include blue and red.
There are a few other flag proposals on Wikipedia, but they’re not very good.
